CDM1001: Introduction to Culture and Design Management

Interdisciplinary thinking lies at the heart of Culture and Design Management. This course introduces fundamental perspectives, concepts, and methods across culture, design, management, UX, technology, art, branding, and marketing. Through lectures, case discussions, and interdisciplinary projects, students will learn to connect these domains and develop thoughtful strategies for real-world opportunities.

Develop an understanding of art as a cultural and expressive practice and apply this perspective to the critical analysis of a real-world design case.

Contents should include

  1. Selected Case

    • Briefly introduce the selected social innovation or design case.
    • Identify the social or cultural issue addressed by the case.
  2. Problem–Solution Analysis

    • Define the problem addressed by the case.
    • Explain the original solution and its intended purpose.
  3. Alternative Design Exploration

    • Present the alternative design decisions considered in the analysis.
    • Include relevant images or visual references where appropriate.
  4. Comparative Analysis

    • Compare the original case and alternative options.
    • Explain how different artistic decisions influence meaning, emotional response, cultural interpretation, or overall experience.
  5. Critical Reflection

    • Identify which option is most appropriate for the intended purpose, audience, and context.
    • Explain whether and how the exploration changed or expanded your initial understanding.

Presentation

No presentation is required. Findings will be discussed through the in-class group exercise.
